Vale Action

2015 – 2020

At the end of the 2007 to 2013 programme Plain Action began the process of bidding for funding in the follow-on programme. There was an expectation that the 150,000-population limit for a LAG would be relaxed, allowing Plain Action to include the A350 corridor in Wiltshire

Six weeks before the bid for funding was due to be submitted, we were informed that the population limit of 150,000 would be retained. The proposed Plain Action area was split into two, resulting in Vale Action being created, based on the A350 corridor from Trowbridge up to Malmesbury. For a few months, the Plain Action board members ran both Plain Action and Vale Action, allowing time for a new board to be recruited to manage Vale Action.

As with Plain Action, Vale Action was delayed until November 2015 before it could accept applications. As the area had not received previous funding there was a high level of enquiries within each of the priority areas:

  • Support to increase farm productivity
  • Support for micro and small businesses (non-agricultural) and farm diversification
  • Support for rural tourism

  • Support for rural services
  • Support for cultural and heritage activity
  • Support for increasing forestry production

This did result in a possible over expenditure, but fortunately an under expenditure on Plain Action allowed funds to be transferred to Vale Action, to cover the additional projects.

Unfortunately Vale Action did not receive any applications under the “Support for increasing forestry expenditure” but the other priorities included the purchase of sheep weighing equipment, automated calf feeding, R&D development for a bicycle tyre manufacturer, provision of an accessible toilet in a town centre and funding for a start-up company.
